' ESCAPING WITHIN ' 179cm x 227cm 2020 / 2021 charcoal, acrylic, oil, enamel.

During quarantine, the four walls of Jian Thrill’s home began to dissolve into dream space.

In that solitude, his conscious and subconscious merged, giving rise to expressionist compositions filled with motifs close to his heart.

‘Poison’ 170cm x 76cm 2021 Charcoal, acrylic, oil, enamel.

“ I was fortunate to return home just before COVID hit, and it was during that time of isolation and self-reflection that I found the motivation to finish it. I had been questioning my own ethos, wondering what I stood for — but eventually came to the realisation that I didn’t need clear answers. I just needed to express myself.

So I painted freely and subconsciously. I filled the canvas with charcoal forms and figurations, then brought them to life with an ethereal Southern Ocean Blue. The figures appeared fragile, almost unwell — their "Bambi legs" suggesting a need for care and stability. In response, I gave them oversized hands, as if to hold and nurture them.

At the time, I was also loosely exploring themes around Aphrodite. Although it started as a passing curiosity, I found that her presence echoed through the atmosphere of the painting, and I followed that instinctive thread as the work evolved. “

 Digital Art Exhibition

Created as part of my IGTV series Book of Faces, this piece explores the “ugly side” of human nature — merging light and dark aspects of identity into a single form. Bold, disruptive lines fragment the figure, reflecting internal conflict and emotional complexity.

Painted during quarantine, the work draws from themes of isolation, mental health, and transformation. Inspired by personal experiences and those of loved ones in lockdown overseas, it speaks to the psychological toll of confinement and the healing power of creative expression.

This piece is both a reflection and a release — a reminder that art helps us hold, process, and ultimately transform our experiences.

3.52 x 1.32m Acrylic , Texture Paste, Oil Pastels, Spray Paint, on Joint Canvasses

This was Jian’s first large-scale painting, created during the early R.T Thrill era in Melbourne. Inspired by the rawness of public walls and city textures, he used texture paste and torn paper to recreate the feel of weathered posters peeling in the streets. It captures the friction between survival, rebellion, and the study of Gray'' anatomy embodying the spirit/research of Jean-Michel Basquiat. A homage.
